What does it cost?
The aim of our licences is to provide institutions with extended online access within their budget.
Portland Press is a not-for-profit publisher owned by the Biochemical Society and the surplus from the sale of our publications is returned to the scientific community through the activities of the Society.
Portland Press journal prices are competitive and we also offer significant savings to all institutions purchasing online only subscriptions in favour of our combined subscription rates.

Access methods and authentication

Access authentication is normally by IP address. If this causes problems, please get in touch, as other methods are available in exceptional circumstances.
Usage statistics
Usage statistics are provided online and are available 24/7. Our usage statistics are COUNTER Compliant. The reports include data from January 2002 and are updated monthly. They can be downloaded in .csv format for ease of use.

Access to back volumes
The online archive for most Portland Press Journals is freely available to anyone with Internet access.
Biochemical Journal: archive dates back to 1906 and is freely available at www.biochemj.org. Access to current content is available on a rolling 6-month basis for non-subscribers. Secure online archive and public deposit is available via PubMedCentral (PMC).
Biochemical Society Transactions, Biology of the Cell and Clinical Science: every year in January the online content of all the previous year becomes free. Full access to the value added final version of articles in the current year is restricted to subscribers.
Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, Essays in Biochemistry Online and Biochemical Society Symposia Online: access to the online archive is free to current subscribers
Online Terms and Conditions for single-site institutions
For single-site institutions that do not require a licence, our standard online terms and conditions apply.
Licence Agreements for multi-site institutions and consortia
We use a standard licence based on the John Cox Model Licence. Our standard licence includes:
- 'Authorized Users' include researchers working at home (either dialling in remotely or via IP address) and authorized 'walk-in' users
- Portland Press will provide continuing access to material that was published and paid for during the period of the licence either from the Server, or by supplying electronic files to the Licensee.
- Usage Statistics are COUNTER Compliant
- Interlibrary loan
- Portland Press allows use in Course Packs, Electronic Reserve collections and Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
